Fireboy and Watergirl 6: Fairy Tales
Fireboy and Watergirl 6: Fairy Tales looks like a storybook cover but plays like a two-person logic exam where one wrong step sends both characters back to the entrance. The dressing is new, but underneath it is the same puzzle-platform game the series has always run on.
Fireboy is immune to fire and can only collect red gems, Watergirl is immune to water and can only collect blue gems, and both can pick up white diamonds. Fireboy moves with the arrow keys while Watergirl uses WASD, so solo players juggle two control schemes at once. Beginners grab every gem they can reach with whichever character is closest, then discover a doorway ahead needs the other character’s color, forcing a walk back through a level with no shortcuts.
How Fireboy and Watergirl 6: Fairy Tales Splits Every Puzzle in Two
The signature addition is the fairy system: small glowing fairies sit in alcoves around each temple, and dragging one with the mouse powers a nearby door or elevator for as long as you hold it in place. The white fairy unlocks anything, but colored fairies only work on matching mechanisms, so a level with more than one locked door often needs separate placements handled in order.
A typical fairy puzzle plays out in a fixed sequence:
- Reach the alcove holding the correctly colored fairy
- Drag it onto the matching lock and hold it there
- Send the character who needs to pass through
- Collect the gems the doorway was blocking
Across the 31 levels, difficulty climbs less from harder jumps and more from how many fairy sequences a room demands at once. Level 6 has a reputation among players as the point where the early forgiving pacing disappears without warning.
The Five Dark Levels Fireboy and Watergirl 6: Fairy Tales Adds to the Series
Once you clear enough normal levels, the game opens its five Dark Levels: the only light comes from the two characters and a small glowing ball, with fairies acting as your sole way to spot crystal gems tucked into corners you otherwise cannot see. Players who breezed through earlier rooms slow down here, since memorizing a layout by sound and silhouette is a different skill than reading a lit puzzle at a glance.
Gems collected across a level break down like this:
- Red gems, collectible only by Fireboy
- Blue gems, collectible only by Watergirl
- White diamonds, collectible by either character
Solo play works by switching control between Fireboy and Watergirl on the fly, but it is noticeably harder than co-op since every fairy-holding puzzle has to be timed against yourself instead of a partner watching the same screen.
Fireboy and Watergirl 6: Fairy Tales earns its place in the series by making the fairies feel load-bearing instead of decorative, and by the time the Dark Levels strip the light away entirely, the storybook framing has turned into one of the tougher tests the series has put in front of two players sharing a keyboard.
