Symbol Module
Symbol is the first Medium module in the campaign and the first one built around sound. The panel shows a set of shapes; one of them makes a noise, and finding it is the first job. Then the team combines that symbol with the current stage, gets a color from the manual and presses the matching button. It runs over several stages, and a wrong button resets the whole sequence, so it rewards a team that keeps careful count. It first appears on Level 8.

How the Module Works
Symbol is staged and audio-based. In each stage, one of the shapes on the panel produces a sound. The team has to find that shape, tell the manual reader which shape it is and which stage they’re on, and then press the color the manual returns for that combination. After four stages, the module is done.
The key thing to understand: the shape alone isn’t the answer. The same symbol can point to a different color in a different stage, so the stage number is half of every lookup.
Who Does What
| Role | Job on Symbol |
| Blind Monkey | Goes through the shapes one at a time and finds the one that makes a sound; presses the final button |
| Deaf Monkey | Describes the shapes and button colors so everyone uses the same names; relays the answer |
| Mute Monkey | Hears the sound too, looks up the stage and symbol in the manual and signals the color |
Since the Deaf Monkey can’t hear anything, this is one of the modules where the Blind and Mute Monkeys carry the audio side. The Deaf Monkey’s value is in giving every shape a stable name the whole team can use.
Step-by-Step Relay
- Name the stage. “Symbol, stage one.” Say it out loud at the start of every stage.
- Test shapes one at a time. The Blind Monkey goes through the shapes deliberately, one by one, rather than jumping around.
- Stop on the sound. When the shape that makes the noise is found, stop and say so: “This one sounds.”
- Name the symbol. The Deaf Monkey confirms which shape the Blind Monkey is on, using the agreed name: “Spiral.”
- Look up the color. The Mute Monkey finds the row for that symbol and the column for the current stage, and signals the color.
- Press once. The Deaf Monkey relays the button’s position, the Blind Monkey repeats it and presses.
- Next stage, fresh lookup. Re-identify the sounding symbol and look the color up again. Never reuse the last color.
Callout Script
- Deaf “Symbol, stage two. Buttons left to right: red, blue, yellow.”
- Blind “Testing first shape… second… this one sounds.”
- Deaf “That’s the spiral. Stage two, spiral.”
- Mute Signals a color.
- Deaf “Blue. Blind: middle button.”
- Blind “Middle button?” – then presses after “Yes.”
Common Mistakes
- Stopping on a shape before confirming it makes the sound. A visible shape isn’t necessarily the sounding one.
- Sending the symbol without the stage. The manual needs both. “Spiral” alone isn’t a lookup.
- Reusing the previous color. Every stage is a new lookup, even if the same symbol sounds again.
- Treating a copied color chart as universal. Lookups can change with patches. Read the in-game manual.
- Losing count after the Alarm. On Levels 10 and 11, the Alarm can fire mid-sequence. Confirm the stage number before the next press.
- Changing shape names. Keep the names you agreed on for the whole session.
Where You’ll Meet It
| Level | Timer | Modules | Chaos |
| 8 | 3:30 | Random Easy + Symbol | Pressure |
| 10 | 4:00 | Symbol + Piano | Alarm |
| 11 | 4:00 | Soundboard + Symbol | Alarm |
| 12 and later | Varies | Can be rolled in Random Medium slots | Varies |
Level 8 is the gentlest introduction: one Easy module, Symbol and Pressure. It’s worth replaying until the stage-and-symbol callout feels natural, because Levels 10 and 11 pair Symbol with other Medium modules and the Alarm.
Practice Checklist
- The shapes have fixed names everyone uses.
- Every stage starts with “stage” and its number.
- The Blind Monkey tests shapes one at a time and stops on the sound.
- Every lookup uses both the symbol and the stage.
- Each press is repeated back before it happens.
- After an interruption, the team confirms the stage before continuing.
FAQ
How many stages does Symbol have?
Four. The sounding symbol and the correct color can change in every stage.
What happens if we press the wrong color?
A wrong button resets the entire sequence, so the module starts again from the first stage – and it counts as a mistake.
Why can’t the Deaf Monkey find the sounding symbol?
Because the Deaf Monkey can’t hear. The sound has to be found by the players who can – in practice, the Blind Monkey testing the shapes, with the Mute Monkey listening too.
Where does Symbol first appear?
On Level 8. It’s named again on Levels 10 and 11 and can appear in Random Medium slots afterward.
